Notation: this is a spoiler-costless advance review of Rick and Morty's Flavor 4 premiere, "Edge of ToMorty: Rick Die Rickpeat." The episode premieres on Developed Swim on Sun, November 10 at 11:30pm EST.
The long Rick and Morty drought is finally over. It's refreshing to see the series become back to basics and simply focus on what happens when a very disgruntled Rick and his grandson embark on an adventure and things inevitably get haywire. This episode even throws in a few other familiar faces for good measure. Two of the funnier scenes in this episode revolve effectually Mr. Goldenfold, of all characters.
Not that the premiere is guilty of dwelling too long in the by. Information technology'south easy to infer some plot details from the Tom Prowl-spoofing title, just it's condom to say no one will predict all the weird tangents and swerves. Part of Rick and Morty'southward entreatment is that it'southward a genuinely clever and thoughtful science fiction serial beneath all the R-rated humour and Rick-isms. Y'all could strip all the jokes from the equation and even so accept a watchable, high-concept series that both honors and subverts the genre tropes. This episode drops plenty of pop civilisation references and homages along the fashion, only the conflict is wholly Rick and Morty. The result is a very eclectic, fast-paced adventure that doesn't slow downwards long enough to overstay its welcome. If anything, the premise could hands have filled out an hour-long episode, though bacteria is probably better in the end.
Some other big plus is how Morty-driven the premiere turns out to be. Morty really experiences a very well-realized grapheme arc over the course of 22 minutes, one that emphasizes how much he himself, not Rick, is the architect of his own misery. The serial tin be very contemptuous when information technology hinges on Rick and his disability or unwillingness to abound as a person, just information technology becomes something else when Morty is the master protagonist. This episode doesn't beat viewers over the head with its message, only information technology does cover that message and a newfound sense of optimism. It'll be interesting to run across if that sparks a trend in Flavour 4 and a general shift abroad from the relatively darker approach of Season three.
The Verdict
Non only does Rick and Morty go along its groove following a ii-year hiatus, "Border of ToMorty: Rick Die Rickpeat" is the evidence's strongest season premiere to date.
